Lessons

Lesson 1 – Basics of Controlled Substances and Diversion

This first of three modules will introduce the pharmacy technician learner to the basics of controlled substances and diversion. This session will explore the reasons that individuals divert and how to spot the signs of impairment in health care professionals. This module will also highlight the places and procedures in pharmacy that create high-risk situations for diversion.

Lesson 2 – DEA Requirements

This second of three modules will explore Drug Enforcement Administration requirements that must be followed to reduce the risk for diversion of controlled substances. An overview of DEA schedules will be provided to equip the learner to classify controlled substances into the appropriate schedule. DEA registration requirements will be discussed along with methods to validate providers’ DEA numbers. This session will also identify the proper procedures for ordering, inventory, and record-keeping as well as procedures for the sale of controlled substances and restricted over-the-counter medications.

Lesson 3 – Prevention of Diversion

This final of three modules will empower learners to prevent diversion in any health care setting through the implementation of a comprehensive and effective diversion prevention program. This will include information on recognition of suspicious behavior, tampering, and fraudulent prescriptions, as well as best practices to identify and prevent diversion. This session will also include a discussion of the appropriate actions to take during a robbery or theft situation.

Lesson 4 – Review

This unaccredited module will help participants review the concepts originally discussed in the Pharmacy Technician Enhanced Training: Controlled Substance Diversion Prevention (PTETCSDP) Certificate in order to prepare for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)’s Controlled Substance and Diversion Prevention Certification exam.
