This series will focus on equipping the technician with necessary skills for product verification, including knowledge of common medications, calculations, dosage forms and routes of administration, medication safety, and legal issues pertaining to TPV.

Pharmacy technicians play an important role in the dispensing process in the pharmacy. As pharmacists’ roles transition to more clinically-focused tasks, technicians have an opportunity to assume expanded roles and responsibilities, including technician product verification (TPV). This series will focus on equipping the technician with the necessary skills for product verification, including knowledge of common medications, calculations, dosage forms and routes of administration, medication safety, and legal issues pertaining to TPV.

This series is developed based on the blueprint for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s Technician Product Verification Certificate. Additionally, pharmacy technicians who complete this series will be prepared to sit for that assessment.

Lessons

Module 1: Introduction to Pharmacy Technician Product Verification and Literature Review

Credits: 0.5 credit hours

Overview: During the presentation, the speaker will introduce the topic of technology assisted pharmacy technician product verification. A broad overview of the topic and its history, including published jurisdictional successes over 40+ years will be presented. In addition, the module will cover practice model examples in various sectors, providing an evidence-based approach and philosophy for how to broach this topic. Published literature, safety data, and other outcomes will be discussed and presented for learners to consider and digest. The learner should take away an introductory understanding after completing this module.

Module 2: Pharmacy Technicians: Heading into the Future

Credits: 0.5 credit hours

Overview: Pharmacy technicians work in all sectors of pharmacy and are involved in a wide variety of activities that support the work of the pharmacist and the workflow of the pharmacy. Their role is essential to the life and work of the pharmacy and is defined primarily by state laws. This educational session will explore the different types of pharmacy technician and their current range of duties, and will educate attendees on expanded activities permitted and sought for pharmacy technicians, including technician product verification or tech-check-tech. Finally, this session will help learners understand the principles of legal liability that pharmacy technicians face while carrying out their duties.

Module 3: Technician Product Verification Calculations

Credits: 1 credit hour

Overview: Calculations are a critical component of pharmacy practice, and yet so many technicians struggle with this area of study. Within this module, pharmacy technicians will learn the fundamentals of measurement in the field of pharmacy as well as the concept and appropriate application of the ratio-proportion methodology that can be used to find the solution to any math problem they will encounter. An emphasis on logic and critical thinking will be reviewed rather than relying on memorization and using a formulaic approach to problems.

Module 4: Common Medications

Credits: 1 credit hour

Overview: Prescription and product verification looks at many different components to ensure the safety of patients. This session seeks to explore the common medications that are dispensed in pharmacy. The ability to recognize high risk drugs, drugs with narrow therapeutic indexes, and look-alike-sound-alike drugs is crucial to the process of safe prescription and product verification. The session further explores drugs which require special dispensing, such as in original packaging or refrigerated drugs.

Module 5: Dosage Forms and Routes of Administration

Credits: 0.5 credit hours

Overview: Prescription and product verification looks at many different components to ensure the safety of patients. This session differentiates the different dosage forms, and by which route they are administered. The ability to distinguish between these dosage forms is critical to ensuring the proper medication is dispensed to patients.

Module 6: Equipment and Supplies

Credits: 0.5 credit hours

Overview: Prescription and product verification looks at many different components to ensure the safety of patients. This session details diabetic supplies, syringes, and auto-injectors and how to use them. This session also reviews Medicare Part B regulations and prescription requirements when dispensing these items.

Module 7: Product Verification Process

Credits: 0.5 credit hours

Overview: Prescription and product verification looks at many different components to ensure the safety of patients. This session details the steps of TPV and reviews best practices. This session will also review how to apply the steps in a practice setting.

Module 8: Error Prevention/Reporting/Rx Components and Requirements

Credits: 0.5 credit hours

Overview: Prescription and product verification looks at many different components to ensure the safety of patients. This session will explore the impact of medication errors and events. This session will also review how to identify medication errors and events, typical reporting procedures, and the benefits of reporting. Further, this session will detail the requirements of a valid prescription for controlled substances, Medicare, and regulatory boards.

Deeb D. Eid, PharmD, RPh currently serves as a Regulatory Affairs Advisor in Pharmacy for CVS Health working on regulatory/legislative efforts throughout the country. He formerly served as Faculty at Ferris State College of Pharmacy and completed an Executive Residency with PTCB in Washington D.C. He has served on various national, regional, and local boards, working on pharmacy law, public policy, volunteering for political campaigns, and conducting research to advance pharmacy practice. His focus areas include pharmacist prescribing, pharmacy team role advancements, and evidence-based law making.

Peter Cohron

Peter P. Cohron, BSPharm, JD, is a 1980 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and a 1993 graduate of the UK College of Law. He taught pharmacy and health law at UK for 10 years from 2002 to 2011. Currently, he is the owner and operator of Pharmacy Law Source and a partner in Pharmacy Education Source, two businesses that provide legal counsel and advice to pharmacists, interns, technicians and pharmacies nationwide, as well as educational materials. Peter practices both professions. As a pharmacist, he has experience in both retail community and hospital pharmacy. As an attorney, Peter has represented pharmacists, technicians, and interns all the way from Alaska to North Carolina. Peter has been doing MPJE preps for several states since 1998 and enjoys a first attempt pass rate for those using his materials of better than 98%. Licensed in Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee, he is currently a member of the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy.
