Infertility can be a monumental obstacle for patients to overcome. Module 1

This is the first module of a six-module series that explores a variety of recognized treatments, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic. In this module, the anatomy and physiology of the female and male reproductive systems will be examined. The menstrual cycle; the processes of fertilization, implantation, parturition, and lactation; and the hormonal changes that take place from puberty throughout pregnancy will be discussed. This background knowledge will allow for the pharmacist to have a complete understanding of the pathogenesis of infertility.

1. List the functions of the female and male reproductive organs

2. Differentiate what occurs in each phase of the menstrual cycle

3. Define the process of fertilization, implantation, and parturition

4. Recognize the neuroendocrine regulation of lactation

Module 2

This is the second module of a six-module series that explores a variety of recognized treatments, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic. This module will describe the prevalence and etiological factors associated with male and female infertility as well as the challenges associated with treating infertility, prevention methods, and why it is critical for society to address the disease state.

1. Define infertility including primary and secondary infertility

2. Identify the etiological factors associated with female and male infertility

3. Recognize the challenges associated with treating infertility

4. List recommendations to prevent infertility

Module 3

This is the third module of a six-module series that explores a variety of recognized treatments, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic. This module will describe the approach to the evaluation of the female and male patient to assess infertility including the history, physical exam, and other pertinent diagnostic tests. The psychosocial aspects to infertility will also be discussed.

1. Specify when to refer a patient to seek an evaluation for infertility

2. Recognize how a specialist evaluates a female for infertility including the history, physical exam, laboratory, and imaging criteria

3. Recognize how a specialist evaluates a male for infertility including the history, physical exam, and the requirements of a semen analysis

4. Define what is meant by unexplained infertility

Module 4

This is the fourth module of a six-module series that explores a variety of recognized treatments, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic. This module will look at lifestyle modifications that can impact fertility as well as the effect of acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. The pharmacological management of infertility and patient counseling for each therapeutic intervention will also be discussed.

1. Recognize how modifying lifestyle factors can help to improve fertility and the role of acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine

2. Indicate the mechanism of action, dose, and efficacy for medications used in the treatment of infertility

3. Recognize the treatment options for women who are not ovulating, those with clinical evidence of ovulation, and for those who have an unclear history of ovulation

4. Specify the risks of using fertility medication including adverse effects and other pertinent patient counseling points

Module 5

This is the fifth module of a six-module series that explores a variety of recognized treatments, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic. This module will describe in vitro fertilization and intrauterine insemination including the indications, risks, success rates, and the methods used for each procedure. The different types of female and male infertility surgery will also be outlined.

1. Define in vitro fertilization and intrauterine insemination including the steps used in each procedure

2. Recognize the indication, success rate, and risks of in vitro fertilization and intrauterine insemination

3. List the types of female infertility surgeries and the indications for surgery

4. List the types of male infertility surgeries and the indications for surgery

Module 6

This is the final module of a six-module series that explores a variety of recognized treatments, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic. This module will review the regulatory and legal aspects of assisted reproductive technology as well as the psychosocial and psychological impact of infertility in the male and female patient. Suggestions for the role of the pharmacist in managing infertility will also be discussed.

1. Identify limitations of the legal and regulatory requirements related to assisted reproductive technology

2. Specify the psychosocial and psychological aspects associated with infertility that can affect both men and women

3. List the roles of a pharmacist in infertility management

Stacey Schneider

PharmD

Professor, Saybrook University

Dr. Schneider is a licensed pharmacist in Ohio and Florida and has completed a residency in primary care at the John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis, MO in conjunction with earning a teaching certificate in affiliation with the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. She has practiced in the community as a clinician and has been the director of medication management services as well as establishing health/wellness and immunization clinics. Dr. Schneider has transitioned into academia teaching both medicine and pharmacy students and her teaching and scholarship have focused on communication skills, clinical interviews, patient assessment, professional identity development, mentorship and women’s health. She has been certified as an instructor in Mind Body Medicine through the Georgetown University College of Medicine and has led several workshops focused on various techniques that involve self-awareness, meditation, reflection and wellness and is the founder of RaeofLight, LLC.
